The term pH or ‘potential of hydrogen’ determines the level of acidity in a substance, and in this case, a skincare product. On a scale of 0 to 14, 7 is considered neutral, whereas anything below 7 is acidic and above 7 is considered basic. But what does pH balance have to do with skincare? Our skin's barrier, also known as the acid mantle, comprises a delicate balance of oils, acids, and beneficial bacteria that collectively defend against external aggressors and maintain hydration. It has a pH between 5 and 5.5. When this balance is disrupted—often by harsh cleansers, environmental factors, or incorrect product use—the skin's ability to protect itself diminishes. Which is exactly why incorporating skincare products that are pH balanced is extremely crucial.
If the acid mantle and the pH level are disrupted, it can lead to skin dryness, skin tightness or acne. One common example is the feeling of uneasiness in your skin after you’ve cleansed it with a harsh cleanser. On the other hand, if the product is highly acidic (pH < 2.5) or highly alkaline (pH > 8), then your skin will exhibit stronger symptoms like redness, inflammation, and sensitivity and will even take a longer time to restore itself.
